Happy's out front sound is the responsibility of sound
engineer, Keith Renfroe, a thirty-year veteran of
professional live sound and one of the top live sound mixing
artists in the southeast.
Keith began his professional
career at seventeen when he left Chattahoochee,
Florida to tour with the popular regional bands, Crosscut
Saw, and later B.B. Jam. During his career on the
road he has worked with such notables
as Johnny Winter, B.B. King, Bobby Blue Bland, Arlo Guthrie
and Sister Hazel.
"Like the composition and
performance of the music itself there is both art and craft
to engineering the sound during a live performance," Keith
recently explained. "It's my responsibility to pick up on
and enhance the nuances of the music being played by the
band and adjust for the subtle changes that take place in
the performance environment throughout the course of the
show."
"Look, it doesn't matter how
good a song is or the performance of it is, it's worthless
if it does not reach the ears of the audience as it was
intended to sound. That's more than just tweaking a volume
slider or EQ-ing out some squeal," Bodega Bob interjected.
"We're not one of those fire & forget bands - you know what
I'm saying here - where the engineer can set the sound once
& then go & sit at the bar for the rest of the show drinking
whiskey and flirting with babes. We flog our sound engineer
mercilessly - Keith is one of the busiest guys in the show -
but he is one of those rare engineers who is up to the task.
Not only does he have a lifetime of skill & experience with
a wide variety of equipment and environments, but he has
that special sense of how to craft the sound of individual
songs to capture and place out front the correct feel that
we want a particular song to have."
"Keith is as integral and
valuable a member of the band as the those of us who are on
the stage," declared Sugar. "He is an artist in his own
right and his instrument is the sound board."
"Yeah," responded Hollywood, "a
lot of sound guys are ham-handed board jockeys. It sure is a
pleasure to work with someone as dedicated and accomplished
as Keith!"
